Hints and Tips on removals from Moss of Cornwall.

We do offer a professional packing service to ensure that all of your belongings arrived intact and can be easily found, however you can pack the wooden boxes yourself so you know exactly where everything is.

If you wish to pack yourself we have some useful hints for you.

  • Plan your move well in advance.

  • Make a list of what you are taking, decide if you need a skip for everything you don't want. check your loft, garage, shed, cupboard under the stairs, kids room. You will probably be surprised by how much you've accumulated since you last moved.

  • Boxes, boxes, boxes.
    • ALWAYS MARK FAGILE ITEMS CLEARLY - preferably more than once, if the box comes marked 'this side up' make sure you follow that instruction.
    • Make sure you have more than enough boxes. It'll be the last minute packing of items when you find that you don't have enough, or one breaks, or you suddenly remember that extra cupboard hidden behind the kitchen door with the 'little used' kitchen items that you can't be without. - You will find that something happens that makes you glad of that extra box or two.
    • Don't over fill your boxes. Things are more likely to break in overfilled boxes, not to mention that excessively heavy boxes are likely to fall foul of health and safety regulations (maximum lifting limits) and that they are more likely to be dropped.
    • Don't underfill. Light boxes will shift and half-full boxes may collapse if something heaves is placed on them.
    • Label your boxes. Either write the contents on the side of the box or number your boxes and keep a written list of contents in a notebook.

  • Pack fragile items carefully. Remember that you need to keep them from moving in transit. Newspaper is a fine packing material for most things, but expensive, especially delicate or large items should have bubble wrap, their own box and packing filler.

  • Start packing early. Prioritise your packing so that you don't pack something you need. The first things packed should be the last things unpacked. Everyday things should be packed last.

  • Try no to use bags for small items. Bags are easily crushed and don't stack very well. Small or grouped items in bags can be placed in boxes with other items. Tie the top of the bag to stop it spilling.

  • Bagged clothes can be problematic. It's tempting to shove most of your clothes in a bin bags for the trip. This can be a problem as bin bags can split or be easily ripped. Use boxes or, if you have them, use your suitcases or backpacks, which will have to be brought anyway.

  • NEVER PACK YOUR IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS - Everyone has some important documents in their house somewhere, usually at time of moving it will be about the sale. If they are kept in their own draw or filing cabinet take them out put them in a folder, envelope or briefcase and keep them with you, in your car, with a close relative or friend that you trust or with your solicitor. This ensure that you know where they are when you need them.
